Digimon Adventure Tri Movie 1: Sekai Review: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa

Now you may be wondering what is up with that title

Let me rephrase that

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Are we on the same page now?

Good.

Digimon Adventure Tri got announced as a TV series about a year ago, but then things changed and it got turned into a series of 6 movies which are actually compilations of 24 episodes. And man, the wait was absolute murder. When it got changed into a “movie series” the entire thing was delayed by half a year which only annoyed fans and made me cry a little.

So after numerous delays, a few really good looking trailers and about a year of anticipation and hype, does the first Digimon Tri movie meet the expectations?

In short:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

In more detail:

This review.

nn8cgm

So this is mostly gonna be really scatterbrained and messy because I just finished this thing like 6 hours ago and I’m still crying from happiness because oh my god Tri’s first movie was just about everything I wanted from this.

Let’s get all the not so important things out of the way, this thing looks really good. Some faraway characters do look a bit…reaaaally off model but all the characters from a decent distance look great, the Digimon themselves are super detailed and some of the fight scenes are just really really damn cool.

The ost does a rather good job setting the mood for things and it fit with every scene really nicely.

Now for what really matters in this kind of thing, the story and characters.

Digimon-Adventure-tri-Reunion

The story and characters were both the most exciting and terrifying part of Tri, while I was excited to hang out with the cast I grew up with all those years ago, now around the same age as me, part of me was also completely terrified that the new writers would get the characters completely wrong and that the story would just be some excuse schlock to get the old cast back together for money (Ala Digimon Xros-Wars Hunters)

Oh my god. I am so glad this was NOT the case.

The story is actually really interesting, it plays around with a secret organization, an all new powerful Digimon who might be part of a group that’s been a mysterious thing throughout the franchise, a new girl who suddenly turns out to be a new Digidestined, all the Digidestined from 02 apparently getting beaten really hard and nobody remembering them. There’s a ton of really interesting set-up in this first movie and I’m excited to see where it’ll go.

Most importantly though, the characters.

It’s without a doubt my favorite part of the film.

The characters feel completely natural extension from what they were in Adventure but now as teenagers, relationships start to develop from the side but they’re not at all intrusive, our protagonist tai starts to face new challenges he never even thought about as a kid. There are a bunch of really sweet moments and overall it really makes me happy to be with this old cast again.

CURJW-cUEAQeJOy

I guess if I had one complaint is that there isn’t much to the new Digidestined girl, she’s very typically shy and there’s not much beyond that, there’s a ton of mystery around her that might have something to do with the disappearance of the 02 cast but we’ll have to wait and see about that one.

There’s also the slower pacing but it didn’t bother me since it was filled with all kinds of great and fun moments.

So far Digimon Adventure Tri is taking some great steps and I would love to see this thing go even further, all I can say for now is that the first movie has made for a really strong start. Plus with all the small moments to make long time fans like myself happy, there’s always some value.

And hey, even if this ends up crashing and burning later, we’ll always get plenty of TaixMatt

No I’m dead serious.

Digimon Adventure Tri is currently available on Crunchyroll in certain countries

Fall Anime 2015 Impressions

fall 2015

Well…they do say better late than never right?

Alright alright so I actually wanted to do these 3 episodes in but then I got really lazy playing Final Fantasy XIV so I fell behind a week. But now that that’s over, I can actually do these. I watched 4 episodes of 7 anime that are currently airing and I’ll rank them based on how much I like said first 4 episodes. That’s about all I really need to say so let’s get into it

RANK 7: HEAVY OBJECT

tumblr_nsysmxE3m81rkg64xo1_1280

Heavy Object was intially a series I didn’t intend on picking up until I found out the writer of the original light novels was also the writer of the To Aru Majutsu no Index light novels, then I just had to check it out. So far the series has been rather enjoyable, the tactics that the main characters use to win the battles has been engaging and the characters themselves are very entertaining and likable. However the conflict feels a bit ill-defined and it seems like the main characters aren’t too invested in what’s going on themselves. The show definitely seems like one that takes a bit to get going but the enjoyable stuff ensures that I’ll be sticking around regardless.

RANK 6: CONCRETE REVOLUTIO: CHOUJIN GENSOU

A17260-1069342562.1443583386

It almost pains me to put Concrete Revolutio this low since it’s doing a lot of stuff that appeals to me. It’s flashy, over the top ridiculousness with an interesting premise and setting. The show even builds up intrigue rather well with flashforwards that really make you wonder what’s going to happen in the future for these characters. However like Heavy Object the show is off to a rather slow start and it’s only in Episode 4 where things are finally starting to get a bit of context. So while I certainly can see this thing improving in the next few weeks for now it’s just intriguing and enjoyable.

RANK 5: K: RETURN OF KINGS

A16771-2076078628.1439405680

K is honestly just inherently enjoyable to me, it’s got a crazy nice look, amazing soundtrack and all the characters while not too deep are endlessly entertaining to me. However this season seems to be really picking up the pace, the animation has increased by like a gajillion with great choreography and even better lighting. Also since we know more about the world end the characters this season really gets into the nitty gritty of things, resulting in lighting fast pacing with things constantly happening. Really glad this one is back.

RANK 4: MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: IRON BLOODED ORPHANS

kv

I’m a really big fan of Gundam, I’ve watched just about everything in the Universal Century timeline and almost every AU show out there. But with G-Reco ending up being a failure in most people’s eyes (I still really liked it myself) I was a bit skeptical on how this one would be recieved. Luckily this seems to be the first Gundam in AGES that has really grabbed the anime community in a more general sense, and I can certainly see why. The character writing for the main group shows a lot of promise, what little mecha action we’ve seen so far is really on point, and even my main gripe of the opposing group being a bit one note and evil seems to have been dealt with thanks to two characters that got more screentime in the latest episode. We still haven’t really gotten into the main conflict quite yet so I can’t place it too high but I’m really liking the direction this one is taking so far.

RANK 3: YOUNG BLACK JACK

76125l

Young Black Jack is my thing, oh god it’s my thing. Hospital drama with parts of human psychology and a look into war? Fuck yes, give me that, right now. Black Jack himself is a really great protagonist and his conflict of just wanting to save people being challenged by things like war, greed and human selfishness makes for an engaging watch. And the supporting characters aswell as the presentation are pretty sweet too, definitely checking out the original Black Jack after this is over. (PS: Watch the official music video for the opening and read the comments too, it’s actually the most adorable thing ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-ILVEqlAhE)

RANK 2: NORAGAMI ARAGOTO

noragami

I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this season of Noragami, the idea of having an arc around Bishamon didn’t exactly seem like the most appealing thing. OH GOD, WAS I WRONG. Right from episode 1 this show dives into the main conflict and how it affects the characters, the lovable main trio’s relationship gets challenged and it really puts into perspective how much they mean to eachother. The animation and sound design is insane as usual and every episode has some kind of twist to is that affects the story as a whole and GAAAAH. This is seriously amazing. It’s almost sad really, in any other season, hell any other YEAR, this would’ve easily been my number 1. But unfortunately, a certain anime came out this season that even eclipsed this one, that being…

RANK 1: ONE PUNCH MAN

93e032d1f43a6ba477f078d0a4aaecd81426856507_full

OH YEAH, TOTALLY GIVING INTO THE HYPE, NO REGRETS. One Punch Man was an anime I was already anticipating like crazy but holy shit this thing didn’t just blow the expectations, it fucking destroyed them with a single punch (heh). Every episode is a fucking thrill ride with insanely detailed action scenes, charactes that ooze personality and entertainment and a punchline that’s always exectued with such mastery and vareity it constantly gets a laugh out of me. This is the kind of anime I loved watching as a kid taken to the kind of extreme I absolutely can’t get enough of as an adult. For everything it’s doing well along with being the most entertaining, funny and beautifully animated show I have seen in YEARS. One Punch Man deserves to be at the top of this list, this puts all of what’s been animated of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure to shame.

So yeah, that’s what I thought of all the anime airing this season, it’s easily been my favorite season all year with every show I’ve picked up being something I’ll keep watching. I’ll be doing weekly updates on Wednesday to give out brief thoughts of all the episodes that have come out (If I can stay consistant with that) aswell as the IM@S review coming out next. So I’ll see you then!

A quick look at Hotarubi no Mori e

I was expecting my next blog to either be the Idolm@ster review or the Fall anime impressions but I felt like this short film needed a bit more exposure so that’s why we are here.

hotarubi-03

Hotarubi no Mori e is a 45 minute short film that was adapted from a one shot manga by the same author as Natsume Yuujinchou, interestingly the same director, writer and studio behind Natsume Yuujinchou were the ones to adapt it into a short film.

Hotarubi no Mori e surprised me by making me care way more about two characters in 45 minutes than I do about entire casts of characters over the span of 12-50 episode TV shows. The two leads are fairly simple characters but their relationship is believable and you get a grasp as to who they are and how they affect eachother both positively or just on a pure emotional level. This is backed by animation and art that fits the tone of the film very nicely, it’s not a breathtaking spectacle by any means but it manages to be both pretty and give off a nice mellow atmosphere. You can also apply these words to the OST since I don’t have much else to say on it other than that the ending theme was fucking fantastic.

I do want to talk more about the plot itself but with the movie being the length that it is I can’t really do that without spoiling anything so if you have not watched Hotarubi no Mori e and what I’ve said before has captured your interest I encourage you to stop reading this blog and watch it yourself.

…A-Are they gone?

Good.

Gin.(Hotarubi.No.Mori.E).full.1009663

Alright so talking about the actual story for a bit.

The story starts with our main character Hotaru leaving her home to head for her uncle’s home during the summer, as she recalls memories of herself being lost in the forest crying, leading to the second protagonist, Gin, to notice and help her out of the forest. Gin claims to be a spirit (or yokai if you wanna be a purist) who has had a curse put on him so that he cannot touch a human or else his body will perish. There is a bit more to that story but even under the spoilers section I don’t want to reveal it, it’s a powerful scene that really humanizes a person who isn’t really human.

The difference between a spirit and human lead to some serious issues when Hotaru and Gin start to very slowly develop feelings for eachother, resulting in an ending that sits up there as one of my favorites. The build up to said ending was fantastic too, showing how Hotaru grows over the movie and how their relationship changes as a result of that.

-Gin-and-Hotaru-hotarubi-no-mori-e-36865029-1600-1112

I don’t have much else to say about Hotarubi no Mori e, I might be overselling it a little but I can’t remember the last time an anime has had this level of impact on it. Short film or otherwise. After this I am definitely excited to check out Natsume Yuujinchou aswell as any future adaptations of this author’s work.

Anyway, the next blog will either be the big Idolm@ster review or the Fall anime impressions, hopefully from now on my posts will become a bit more regular. See you later!

Gatchaman Crowds: A surprising look on society

Spoiler warning: If you have not seen Gatchaman Crowds and would like to avoid even the smallest spoilers, turn back now. You have been warned.

I want to start this post by stating that I’m only talking about the first season of Gatchaman Crowds as well as the director’s cut episode Gatchaman Crowds: Embrace. Gatchaman Crowds: Insight will not be discussed, I haven’t seen Insight and it hasn’t even finished airing at the time of writing.

I honestly don’t have that grand of a story as to why I decided to watch Gatchaman Crowds, I was interested, a friend recommended it to me and…it actually really surprised me.

gc

From the outside, Gatchaman Crowds has a super simple plot. There’s a group called the Gatchaman who have transformations with special powers thanks to a device called a NOTE, main girl joins them in the first episode. Heroes beat aliens whee. But from around the end of episode 2 is when it starts playing with the ideas of the standard superhero story and how they’d work in a modern society.

For instance, a commonly accepted idea of superheroes is the fact that their identities must always remain a secret, but the show immediately questions the relevance of this, and indeed by revealing their indentities and acting like celebrities they actually manage to gather a strong following which ends up helping them achieve their goals.

However, the superhero commentary is only a small part of what this show attempts to tackle, as it starts to take a look at how a society where every single member of it has an equally important role to play through social media can function.

Now, most of the post from here on out is me discussing and analyzing what I interpreted as the message and themes of Crowds, aswell as how it’s characters represent them. Unfortunately, I’m a big dumb idiot who’s probably looking at these things the wrong way, so take these with a grain of salt because I can be way off.

So in the universe of the show, there’s an online service called GALAX. This online service is basically the perfection of social media, not only does it allow you to contact other users around the world, it also immediately reports any kind of trouble, from a small personal one to a major crisis and perfectly calculates which kind of action with the people nearby would result in it being resolved.

This sounds almost utopian and for a while, the series almost seems like it’s going in that direction, the Prime Minister is portrayed as a lazy dunce and the population seems to be doing fine on their own with GALAX as their tool…cept there’s one problem. People aren’t perfect, in fact some people are outright shitty.

In episode 5 a power gets introduced called the CROWDS, these are controlled by the HUNDRED, a group of 100 GALAX users that’s led by the creator of the program. This power is only used for dire situations that have a very low success rate of being resloved with just the regular people available. However, some people within the HUNDRED start showing their true colors, having either more extreme or selfish girls. All the founder can do to solve the issue is kick them out and replace them. Which isn’t a conclusive answer and indeed comes back to bite them in the ass SUPER hard.

Oh right I should probably mention the characters before

1342369_1392340353371_full
Hajime is the best girl, no contest.

Hajime Ichinose is straight up one of the most wonderful female characters I’ve ever seen in an anime. Her upbeat nature, bizzare quirks and her outlook on life is something that resonated very strongly with me, the wonderful voice performance by Maaya Uchida truly sells the character and overall I really don’t have anything negative to say about her. I’ve heard some people call her a “Mary Sue”, I can see why someone would get the impression that her morals are always the right ones and she convinces every character of them. But honestly I feel her morals justify what she accomplishes in the story, she believes strongly in the fact that every person has their own reason and story, which means none of them are worth dismissing (or outright killing in the case of the villain. It’s a simple outlook on life but the way she manages to come off as so convincing and genuine about it help in the justification of why the other characters end up agreeing with them. A simple viewpoint can often be the right one and Hajime embodies that beautifully. A viewpoint which affects the other Gatchaman quite heavily.

I’d actually like to talk about Paiman and Sugane Tachibana together, they both embody more old school views of what a superhero is at the beginning, Paiman is the leader of the Gatchaman, someone who has fought for a while and has lost his best friend in a battle with the main villain, which has made him jaded, strict and scared to fight. Despite essentially being a cute little panda. Sugane holds the same values but not for the same rasons. Rather than being a jaded old man he instead holds said values since that was the kind of superhero squad that saved him when he was young, which left a super great impression on him. What Hajime changes about both of them is her more open look on things. When the Gatchaman start getting more out in the open Sugane starts seeing a positive impact that a more open relationship with the public has, and Paiman regains his reason to fight when he sees that people are worth working together with and protecting.

joeutsutsu

On a slightly more…depressing note, there are Utsutsu Miya and Joe Hibiki. Both figures who at the beginning of the show have basically given up on life. Utsutsu hates her very existence, feeling like she can never enjoy anything about it and considering herself an abomination. Joe’s case is less severe but still rather depressing. Having had all of his ambitions crushed in the past, he’s someone who considers himself worthless and he doesn’t strive to do anything great. Always working under his limits because he considers them so low. What’s really interesting about their character development is that it’s closely linked to the show. After an embarassing defeat Joe stops contributing to the Gatchaman force all together, feeling like literally anyone can do his job better than he could. But during the show’s climax he starts to realize that he is needed just as much as anyone else and that his powers can help others. So he jumps back into the fray. Utsutsu’s development is more of a straight uphill climb, she starts off the show like I described but thanks to Hajime’s influence she starts to enjoy herself, she starts feeling like she’s worthy of making friends and in the end, she realizes that she’s just as much of an important member of society as anyone else.

Sadly not much can be said about O.D he’s still a wonderfully entertaining character who also can become a total badass, there are some hints of Hajime having an influcence on him but it’s never fully explained.

Lastly, I want to talk about two main characters who aren’t part of the Gatchaman. Rui Ninomiya and Berg Katse.

ruiandberg4

Rui is the founder of GALAX who originally got the power of CROWDS through Katze, he wants to bring about a “bloodless revolution” through creating a society that functions completely self sufficiently. However as mentioned before, some of the members of the special group he created shows that not everyone is a nice enough person to want to help out others just for the sake of it. Which starts going even further when Katze takes control of GALAX and Rui starts seeing what kind of chaos human beings are capable of. Rui’s development seems like it could mostly be left up to interpretation, though I wouldn’t be writing this if I didn’t share mine.

My interpretation of Rui’s development is his realization of the show’s true message. That even though every person in society has an equally important role to play, some of said roles do have to be things like leaders and heroes in order to keep the populace in check. Without said people laying down laws and examples to follow and instead letting people do whatever they want can result in pure unadulterated madness that can end in total chaos. And what a better example of that than the main villain himself.

Katze is essentially everything that could go wrong with the original intentions of GALAX, a person with seemingly unlimited power and the kind of childlike mind that could cause maximum chaos. His power makes it possible for him to just ignore laws and the kind of people laying down says laws, which resulted in him murdering thousands and destroying worlds. During the end of the climax he gives some really crazy people the kind of power that could make them stand above regular laws, and the first thing they start doing is wrecking government buildings. The only thing that ended up being able to stop Katze were Hajime’s own morals of trying seeing people for what they are and what their story is. Which allows her to literally finally see Katze at the end of Gatchaman Crowds: Embrace, she then starts embracing who he is in the most literal sense I have ever seen and basically absorbs Katze. It’s a bizarre way of showing it but one that I still think has value.

Now I probably made it sound like I think Gatchaman Crowds is some super deep anime, and at the end of the day it’s really not. While the characters do have depth they also have really quircky and out there personalities and designs, plus most of the designs are kinda whacky.

I believe Gatchaman Crowds is a really fun show with a lot of good jokes and character chemistry but the fact that the show has these underlying themes that are actually supported by the characters and their actions is something I felt like digging into.

Or maybe I just look way too deep into this sort of thing because I’m a giant nerd who finds it interesting. I dunno.

Anyway, I could go on about the stylized art or one of the best anime OSTs I’ve heard in years but I’m over 1700 words at 3:30 AM and I’m just really tired.

So yeah, hope you enjoy my first blogpost, I hope it wasn’t too bad as I want to make more in depth posts about shows I really like. So hopefully I’ll see you whenever I post another one of those.

Thanks for reading!

An extra Hajime because I adore her

The post of introduction.

Well, I’m not exactly great at introducing myself…hi.

to_aru_kagaku_no_railgun_s-02-misaka-happy-waving_goodbye-heroine-protagonist-cute

So, as you probably could’ve guessed, I want to have this blog focus on anime. I intend to mainly be an informal blogger that focuses on going into what I think of a certain show/episode in a lot of depth. I may also go into manga, dramas and light novels once in a while, though I’m far less knowledgeable about those.

In terms of what kind of franchises I can talk about specifically, I’m a big fan of stuff like the To Aru series, the Gundam franchise and anything Type-Moon. So if anything new is released in any of those three you’ll most likely see me make a post about it. I’m also thinking about writing posts that are essentially guides to getting into these franchises but now I’m just rambling.

I also want to talk about shows that I either haven’t heard too many people talk about (Like Katanagatari which is flat out amazing and you should watch it right now or else I’ll fucki-) or shows that not a lot of people liked but I really enjoy (Star Driver Star Driver StarDriverstardriverstardriveradwasfea).

I don’t have much else to add to this, like I said I’m bad with introductions and I prefer to write about the things I actually want to write about. I hope you’ll stick around to read my posts!

Oh yeah also major shoutout to my girlfriend Aya for helping me start this out, she’s the best.
